A critics lab that fosters the next generation of women and gender diverse screen critics
The Melbourne Women in Film Festival (MWFF) aims to inspire and empower established and emerging women and gender diverse screen practitioners from Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand and the wider Moana region to help redress the gender imbalance on and behind the screen.
In 2026, MWFF celebrates its 10th anniversary by growing our community of screen creatives and workers, audiences, volunteers, and supporters and spotlighting our region’s talent to advocate for gender equity, and we invite you to join us!
Why support MWFF?
Screen Australia data indicates that women’s participation in key creative roles (writers, directors, producers) across the screen industries remains below parity. In 2023, only 29% of writers, 22% of directors, and 46% of producers of Australian feature films identified as women. Yet, in the same year, audiences identifying as women made up almost 50% of the cinema going public, with women over 50 years old attending more than men of the same age bracket (34% versus 30%).
2026’s festival will continue MWFF’s ongoing commitment to presenting the diversity of women’s and gender diverse screen storytelling and perspectives on the big screen, supporting and advocating for the career development of young and early career filmmakers in the screen industries and cultural landscape, and engaging under served cinema audiences.
All donations help us in our mission to showcase and celebrate the diverse and creative films and stories of women and gender diverse artists across our region.
If you love what we do, you can set up a recurring donation!
MWFF is a registered DGR entity and every donation over $2 is tax-deductible.
