2017 Festival Panelists Announcement

Wow! Less that two weeks until the big day...Opening night of the very first Melbourne Women in Film Festival!

We're pleased to announce that we have some amazing panelists confirmed for our panel - Making, Writing, Doing: Women Getting a Start in Screen Culture.

Discussing the pathways and issues for women getting into the screen industries are filmmaker Amie Batalibasi, actress Nyawuda Chuol, writer/director Nora Niasari, and film critic and Artistic Director of the Czech and Slovak Film Festival of Australia, Cerise Howard.

Moderated by Vy Wijekumar (Human Rights Arts & Film Festival) this is sure to be an insightful discussion. Stay tuned for more panel updates soon!

Spotlight on Opening Night

Our Opening Night Gala is shaping up to be quite the event. To accompany the 1929 film, The Cheaters, is a live music performance by the critically acclaimed and ARIA Award winning, Zulya and the Children of the Underground.

Headed by Zulya Kamalova, this six-piece ensemble draws heavily from Zulya's Tatar and Russian heritage to create music that defies any kind of traditional labelling. Together for thirteen years, four albums, one ARIA award and two other ARIA nominations, Zulya and the Children of Underground have enjoyed unprecedented success in both Australia and overseas.

Described as having "flashes of the Weimer Republic [that] collide with hints of Rota, Zappa, Gypsy music and jazz" (Sydney Morning Herald), the music of Zulya and the Children of the Underground will create an atmospheric, lively and at times haunting soundtrack to The Cheaters' 1920s gangster Australia.

To find out more about Zulya and the Children Underground, head to their website
http://www.zulyaandthechildrenoftheunderground.com/ and, of course, come and see them play at MWFF - Friday 3rd March, 7pm at the Treasury Theatre. Tickets on sale via www.mwff.com.au/festival2017.
